The Dancing Room and its neighbouring dressing rooms and sewing studio are predominantly the home of Kujawy Song and Dance Ensemble. It is here that the Ensemble, established in May 1985, holds its daily practices. Kujawy Song and Dance Ensemble has a rich and interesting history, filled essentially with thousands of regular rehearsals, concerts, training and holiday camps, participation in regional, national and international reviews, competitions and festivals. Kujawy Ensemble is concerned with regional and historic education and so it presents such plays as “Christmas in Kuyavia”, “Proud to be Local” or “Midsummer Night”.
The Ensemble is composed of five dance groups consisting in total of more than a hundred members, a folk band, and a youth band. Their repertoire, besides Kuyavian dances, includes Polish national dances: the Polonaise, the Mazur, the Krakowiak, as well as folk dances from other regions of Poland: Łowicz, Kurpie, Spiš, Rzeszów, Silesia, Żywiec Region and Kashubia. The Ensemble’s performances are characterised by close attention to detail. The dancers’ costumes are made to match models found in museum collections and their choreographies are based on folk and national traditions. The costumes are stored in dressing rooms and they are maintained by a wardrobe technician on a regular basis. The oldest pieces, being approximately 100 years old, are traditional Kurpie garments.
