The market square in Górzno
Market square is the central place for many cities, a place for meetings, demonstrations, dates, and formerly a place for trade. The same is true for the Górzno market square, first packed earth, then stones, pavement, asphalt, and cobblestones. Initially an open space with a pump as a water source, later with a lantern, and still later adorned with greenery, shrubs, flowers, and trees.
The city, chartered under Chełmno law, had a market square in the shape of a rectangle. It was always a small town. In 1881, there were 417 buildings in the town, including 203 houses. Trade fairs, for horses and cattle, were held in the market square four times a year.
The market square gathered those running their small or larger businesses. Cold cuts shops, colonial goods shops, bakeries, pastry shops, shoemakers' workshops, boot shaft workshops, there were two hotels, restaurants, a bar and others by the market square.
The market was and is a place where public and private transport stops were and are located. Initially, a postal stagecoach set off from the market square to deliver letters and parcels to their recipients. More than once, a stagecoach was used to transport either visitors to Górzno or those leaving Górzno for the train in Radoszki. The railway line was commissioned in 1887.
The current shape of the market square was formed after World War II, in the market space, where residential buildings once stood, monuments in honor of those who gave their lives for the homeland and in memory of the visit of King Stefan Batory appeared over time.
The market square is changing, undergoing transformations, tenement houses are being renovated, old inscriptions are being painted over, replaced by neon signs and information boards. However, the place remains the central square of the city - its heart.
