Stefan Gierowski painted 'Picture DCXLIII' in 1991 in oil on canvas. The artist dealt with the problems of colour and light, optical phenomena and the suggestion of space and movement with great consistency. In the collection of the Bydgoszcz museum, we have an original collection of his realisations. Its beginnings date back to 1972, when the Department of Visual Arts of the Ministry of Culture and Art approved the creation of an author's collection of Stefan Gierowski at the Leon Wyczółkowski District Museum in Bydgoszcz. From that moment on, systematic acquisition of the artist's works took place. Frequent reviews of the painter's achievements directly in his studio made it possible to identify the most typical examples of individual creative cycles. The set of works, purchased in part and enlarged in part thanks to the author's donation, covers the artist's oeuvre from 1950, when figurative works were still being created, to the realisations of recent years.
Gierowski's paintings are difficult to classify unequivocally into any one style. They are inspired by abstraction of the informel type, Unism, visualism and post-constructivist art. At the same time, with their sophisticated play of textures and colours, they continue the school of colourism.
