The Bydgoszcz Castle was erected in the 11th century, during the reign of Casimir the Restorer. It was a wooden fortress surrounded by a moat filled with water. The main element of defence was the rampart. Wood, mainly oak, was used to build it. Boxes - chambers were filled with earth and large stones. The solid binding of the crates was ensured by logs, laid with huge branches like hooks, perpendicular to the long logs forming the face of the rampart. Huge boulders also reinforced the face of the rampart. The main excavations associated with its discovery were carried out in 2007. The archaeological research allows the width of the rampart at the base to be determined at 17-18 m. Its height, at the time of the castle's operation, may have been 10-12 m. The castle with such powerful fortifications was on a par with the largest defensive structures of this type known from Gniezno, Poznań or Ostrów Lednicki.
