Henryk Stażewski produced a work entitled 'Composition' probably in 1948 in oil on canvas. The painting was exhibited at the Modern Art Exhibition at the Palace of Art in Krakow at the turn of 1948 and 1949. This exhibition, organised by the pre-war avant-garde together with the young generation of artists, became the first post-war manifestation of the idea of new art in modern society. The presentation was dominated by realisations referring to geometric abstraction and the surrealist-metaphorical trend. Stażewski then presented paintings in which, using line and colour, he wanted to demonstrate the independence of art from external reality. He became an exponent of the view that a non-representational image is a synthesis of reality and a reflection of the regularities of the real world.
