The photograph shows the moment the Polish Army entered the Stary Rynek/Old Market Square/ on 20 January 1920. On the market square one can see Bydgoszcz citizens with banners, the Singing Society and dignitaries welcoming the Polish soldiers led by Lieutenant Colonel Witold Butler. In the background is the western side of the Old Market Square with the Jesuit church and townhouses decorated in garlands. The event went down in history as Bydgoszcz's return to independent Poland.
