The reason for the creation of this wooden model of the tower helmets was the destruction by a hurricane in 1848 of the baroque helmets of the towers of the Jesuit church standing on the Old Market Square. The social committee set up to rebuild the towers commissioned the master carpenter Alexander Stüber to make a structural model of the helmets, which was to be used for future reconstruction. Lack of funding made reconstruction impossible and the project never came to fruition. It was not until 1882 that new towers of neo-Gothic form were built.
