In the event of an emergency during the nitroglycerine production process, workers could release the locks on the equipment and the nitroglycerine produced would go into this vat. The vat contained water. By mixing the reaction mixture with a large amount of water, the acids were diluted and cooled, giving the unstable reaction a chance to stop.
