Nitroglycerine was created in this device. Using the improved Schmidt-Meissner method, production was more efficient and safer. Nitroglycerine is formed by the chemical reaction of glycerine, sulphuric acid and nitric acid. The reaction mixture is extremely unstable. To minimise the risk of it exploding, the nitroglycerine must be separated from the excess acids as quickly as possible.
