They were intended to provide protection against bomb blast shrapnel or light gunfire. They provided no safety in the event of a direct hit with a larger calibre. They were equipped with openings for observing the area. They are sometimes referred to as 'pencil bunkers' because of their characteristic shape. The shelters were built for the DAG Bromberg factory by the Dywidag company of Cossebaude near Dresden.
