Tadeusz Brzozowski's painting 'Lombard', from 1965, was executed in oil on canvas. The painter, author of drawings, stage designer, actor in Tadeusz Kantor's underground theatre, member of the 2nd Kraków Group, remains one of the most outstanding individualities of 20th century Polish art. The character of his works is determined by his fascination with grotesque surrealism and lyrical abstraction, as well as literary references. Brzozowski's paintings amaze with their power of expression, boldness of colour, sophisticated matter, often strongly accentuated texture and fanciful, archaising titles. They bring to mind the achievements of Witkacy, of whom the painter was an admirer. The author himself admitted: "All my painting was and is stigmatised by literature and music. I could show specific places in the painting Lombard, where I could not avoid the materiality of Grochowiak's vision. However, I cannot afford a comprehensive analysis revealing the blood circulation of my own work. An analysis showing all possible influences and inspirations".
