Porcelain is a high-quality ceramic. It is impervious to water, a good insulator and resistant to chemical attack. The Chinese ceramic vessels shown in the exhibition mainly date from the Song (960-1279), Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1912) dynasties. Undoubtedly the object that draws attention is a vase painted in gold on a background dusted with cobalt. After the cobalt-colored glaze was applied to the body of the vessel, it was fired at a high temperature. The ornament was then painted with gold and the vessel was fired again, this time at a low temperature.
Another standout exhibit is a large decorative platter painted in inlaid paints with a representation of a pair of kingfishers. They are a symbol of happiness in marriage.
